Santa Sabina is a beautiful, peaceful retreat center that was once a Dominican cloister. The physical arrangement of its Chapel, and its marvelous acoustics, are very similar to the chapels Hildegard and her singers used.

More Information: Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was a Benedictine Abbess, mystic, visionary, wisdom teacher, composer, singer, author, healer, and spiritual conscience for the patriarchy of her time. Her songs are filled with beautiful melodies and images that deeply nourish heart and soul. By singing her songs, we receive her teachings in the same way as the women and men she guided during her lifetime.

Devi Mathieu sings medieval and contemporary music in the USA and Europe, offers vocal instruction and coaching, and helps reveal the voices of those who think or have been told they cannot sing. In addition to performing as a soloist in many concert offerings of Hildegard von Bingen’s music, Devi has taught Hildegard’s music, using the medieval oral tradition, since 1996.

Devi has studied with some of the world’s most respected interpreters of medieval music, including Barbara Thornton, Margriet Tindemans, and Karen Clark. She regularly collaborates with composer, author, and pianist William Allaudin Mathieu and with string virtuoso Shira Kammen. Devi and Shira co-direct Vox Flora and Vox Terra, early music ensembles that present medieval sacred music under the auspices of Numina Center for Spirituality and the Arts.

Devi is deeply committed to exploring the common roots from which all human spiritual traditions arise, and helping bring this commonality into contemporary consciousness through song. A student and practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, American Sufism, and Christian mysticism for more than 30 years, her studies also embrace Judaism, native Middle Eastern traditions, and Eastern European song and dance traditions.
