Event: Song and Silence - A Weekend of Immersion in the Music of Hildegard von Bingen

Summary: The wisdom of 12th century mystic Hildegard von Bingen dwells in her music, and her teachings come alive whenever we sing her songs. Experience Hildegard’s music the way she shared it with the women and men who sang with her, in a gentle contemplative process of listening and singing together, through the ear to the heart.

This weekend retreat offers an exceptional opportunity for immersion in Hildegard’s ecstatic music. We will sing as Hildegard would have taught us – by ear and by heart. We will gather several times each day and evening to sing, following the pattern of Hildegard’s Benedictine tradition. We’ll hear stories about her life and times and contemplate her visions. And there will be plenty of silent time for reading, writing, drawing, painting, walking, and relaxing.

No previous experience is required. Open to everyone who enjoys singing or has always wanted to sing.

More Information: Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was a Benedictine Abbess, mystic, visionary, wisdom teacher, composer, singer, author, healer, and spiritual conscience for the patriarchy of her time. Her songs are filled with beautiful melodies and images that deeply nourish heart and soul. By singing her songs, we receive her teachings in much the same way as the women and men she guided during her lifetime.

Devi Mathieu sings medieval and contemporary music in the USA and Europe, offers vocal instruction and coaching, and helps reveal the voices of those who think or have been told they cannot or should not sing. In addition to performing as a soloist in many concert offerings of Hildegard von Bingen’s music, Devi has taught Hildegard’s music, using the medieval oral tradition, since 1996.

Devi leads evening gatherings that give singers of all levels the opportunity to sing Hildegard’s music as contemplative practice. These evenings, called Through the Ear to the Heart, are presented through Numina Center for Spirituality and the Arts, www.numinacenter.org.
